Diastratic variation of /e/ epenthesis in Spanish-speaking students of English teaching as an L2

Abstract
This investigation focuses on the diastratic variation of the phoneme /s/ in onset position in English words beginning with a consonant. The main objective is to determine the influence of the socioeconomic level of Spanish speakers on the production of the vocalic epenthesis /e/ in English words with a /sC/ syllabic onset. To achieve this, the research design involves the oral elicitation of carrier phrases by English pedagogy students from a private university in Santiago, Chile, representing different socioeconomic levels. Each phrase includes an English word starting with /st/, /sk/, or /sp/ within a carefully controlled phonological context, analyzed through spectrograms. Despite what has been reported in the literature, the results reveal that a high socioeconomic level does not reduce the occurrence of epenthesis in English words starting with /sC/. These findings are influenced by the students’ high proficiency in the English language, hypercorrection effects, and the vocalic context of the target word.
