The gothic forest in El diablo verde en la Selva Negra: between purification and damnation

Abstract
El diablo verde en la Selva Negra (1830) is a unique example of Spanish Gothic fiction. Its complexity lies in both its intricate narrative structure and its transformation of the landscape into an active force of terror, shaped by the interplay of the sublime and the sinister. An ecogothic reading reveals the forest is not merely a setting but an autonomous Gothic entity. It tests the protagonists, Félix and Dorotea, through a series of ordeals that expose the ongoing conflict between civilization, seen as a controlled and ordered space; and nature, depicted as wild and untamed. As the only example of supernatural irrational Gothic in Spanish literature, the novel breaks with conventional genre boundaries, as it anticipates a post-anthropocentric worldview, in which the protagonists’ final redemption is determined by their relationship with nature.
